The profit section includes the Pope's underlining that Henry has expressed a "willingness to pay an annual tribute to the blessed Peter of one penny from every house".

For this, Henry is given full discretion to do "whatever may tend to the honour of God and the welfare of the land", presumably as interpreted by Henry himself.

Unfortunately for a later Henry, whose bollox were immortalised by Brendan Behan as a first class relic, the Pope's mandate posed problems following the reformation as it would have undermined that Henry's claims to rule Ireland. Hence the invocation of the Act of Supremacy which, unfortunately held sway for far too long in Ireland, although the "Old English" did put up a spirited resistance until the advent of Blessed Oliver Cromwell.

Part of the problem with that resistance was the undermining of the tithes levied by the then established church.

So, when you hear the sound of a Papal Bull, can Peter's Pence be far behind?Benny the Bridgebuilderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04763002558985058266noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26781589.post-31321327440857500242008-10-17T09:09:00.000+01:002008-10-17T09:09:00.000+01:00I love this one.The Government taking a leaf out o...I love this one.

The Government taking a leaf out of the Church's book.

Put your contribution in the collection plate or you'll be instantly read off the altar.

No compulsion, all voluntary.

However did they manage to keep the confessional private all these years.

Full marks to Joe Meade for standing up to this blackmail. He has stated a principle. Even if he were to offer a reduction.

Interesting implications here for Freedom of Information and Data Protection when the dust settles.

Interesting also how they just took the automatic medical cards from the over 70s. No voluntarism here.

What will they do if they get stuck with honouring their guarantee to bank depositors?

"Sorry, this was never meant to be paid out. We clearly stated at the time that the measure was designed to maintain confidence in the banking system at a very critical moment. We were heartened by the response of the Irish people at that most critical time and we are grateful to them. Unfortunately confidence did not continue, nor was it bought into by those foreigners who do not understand the Irish mentality.

We regret that we are not currently in a position to fulfill the misguided expectations of depositors and wish them all well in their new careers."Benny the Bridgebuilderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04763002558985058266noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26781589.post-63438124532413907932008-09-23T12:25:00.000+01:002008-09-23T12:25:00.000+01:00Sure arn't they still selling masses, including wi...Sure arn't they still selling masses, including with the thinly disguised rpm veneer of the prepaid mass card.

I can't wait for the prepaid plastic card. How many masses would that be, now? Five, fifteen, or twenty. Or prehaps a gold century card with a hundred, to be cashed in over a lifetime. One hundred multiplied by infinity still only equals infinity.

Do I see the trade descriptions act lurking in the background.

Good lord, this is great fun.

And I haven't even mentioned indulgences.
